Background Attorney Martin Cohen
has lived in Portland since 1973. He completed his law degree at
Lewis and Clark Law School in 1976, and his undergraduate degree
is from Northwestern University in Chicago. Martin represented
his first Social Security disability claimant in 1979. Since 1985,
he has focused his practice primarily on representing the disabled before
the Social Security Administration, in administrative hearings in Portland
and in the Oregon District of the US Federal Court, as well as the Ninth
Circuit Court of Appeals.
He has been a member of the Oregon Bar Association since 1977.
He also belongs to the Multnomah County and the Clackamas County Bar
Associations, The National Organization of Social Security Claimants Representatives
(NOSSCR), the Oregon Criminal Defense Lawyers Association. He is
the administrator of Independent Defenders, Inc. Mr. Cohen has also
practiced for many years in the area of juvenile law. Because his
juvenile court work, he has a particular expertise in children's
SSI cases.
He lives in Portland with his wife and two sons.
